The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 13th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Jason Bateman, James Cromwell, Giancarlo Esposito, Ron Cephas Jones, Andrew Scott, Martin Short
The competition: It’s always good to look at past nominees in this category as a starting point. Giancarlo Esposito has been promoted to the supporting category for “The Mandalorian,” where he’s expected to be nominated. This is the first time in his show’s history that two-time Emmy winner Ron Cephas Jones isn’t on the ballot, but a nominee from two years ago, Michael Angarano (This Is Us), could return. Similarly, Dan Bucatinsky (Rebel) had another meaty role on a soapy ABC drama that won him this prize in 2013, for “Scandal,” and he could return again too. Speaking of past nominees, T.R. Knight (Grey’s Anatomy) is reprising an Emmy-nominated role, while Don Cheadle (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Courtney B. Vance (Lovecraft Country) and Timothy Olyphant (The Mandalorian) are both back in different parts. Fans of this season’s likely Best Drama Series champ have the opportunity to reward sentimental favorite Charles Dance (The Crown), while those who really love nostalgia might vote for Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy) or Mark Hamill (The Mandalorian). Other high-profile possibilities include Carl Weathers (The Mandalorian), Titus Welliver (The Mandalorian), and Bill Burr (The Mandalorian), and anyone paying attention to popular shows should recognize the talent of Tony Goldwyn (Lovecraft Country) and Corey Stoll (Ratched), though I’m doubtful either will merit a spot. It would also be great to see Norm Lewis (Pose) nominated for a very moving hour of his show.
The predicted nominees: Dance, Hamill, Lewis, Olyphant, Vance
The predicted winner: If he’s nominated, I think Hamill wins for sentiment’s sake.
