Emmy Predictions: Best Writing for a Comedy Series

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 13th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Whenever You’re Ready (The Good Place), The Great (The Great), Happy Ending (Schitt’s Creek), The Presidential Suite (Schitt’s Creek), Collaboration (What We Do in the Shadows), Ghosts (What We Do in the Shadows), On the Run (What We Do in the Shadows)

The top contenders:
Sword (Chad)
December 19 (Cobra Kai)
Split the Lark (Dickinson)
In Case of Emergency (The Flight Attendant)
Pilot (Generation)
Pilot (Girls5eva)
There Is No Line (Hacks)
Chapter 17. In All the Old Familiar Places (The Kominsky Method)
Let’s Meet (Made for Love)
Moments in Love, Chapter 4 (Master of None)
Pilot (Mr. Mayor)
Respect in the Workplace (Mr. Mayor)
Play (Pen15)
Vendy Wiccany (Pen15)
New York State of Mind (The Politician)
Pilot (Rutherford Falls)
Move (Shrill)
All Sales Final (Superstore)
Make Rebecca Great Again (Ted Lasso)
Pilot (Ted Lasso)
Rhymes with Broke (Woke)
Zoey’s Extraordinary Goodbye (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist)
Zoey’s Extraordinary Reckoning (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist)

Only one of last year’s nominated shows, Pen15, is eligible again, and it’s very likely to return, though it’s not clear for which (or both) of its two chosen episodes. There’s also Master of None, which went two for two when it was previously on in this category. Ted Lasso has half the episodes submitted here that it does for directing, and it’s a good bet they’ll both be included along with the single selections of Hacks and The Flight Attendant. That might fill up the category, with Girls5eva a strong contender and Made for Love also distinctly possible. Watch out for Mythic Quest and Cobra Kai, two shows I’ve never seen, which have four and one episodes submitted, respectively. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Generation, Shrill, or Dickinson made the cut too?

The predicted nominees: In Case of Emergency (The Flight Attendant), There Is No Line (Hacks), Play (Pen15), Vendy Wiccany (Pen15), Make Rebecca Great Again (Ted Lasso), Pilot (Ted Lasso)

The predicted winner: I think the first episode of Ted Lasso wins.
