The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 13th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Angela Bassett, Bette Midler, Maya Rudolph, Maya Rudolph, Wanda Sykes, Phoebe Waller-Bridge
The competition: Well, betting against last year’s double nominee and winner Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) seems like a bad idea. While there are many more men submitted as guests, in this race it’s only Anya Taylor-Joy (Saturday Night Live) and Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) who could join Rudolph, and I think they’re both very likely. Tina Fey (Girls5eva) is another favorite of this category who should get in even if her show doesn’t land all that emphatically in other races. The same goes for Bernadette Peters (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist), a screen presence whose popularity might eclipse that of her series. Issa Rae (A Black Lady Sketch Show) seems like a good bet both because Angela Bassett got in last year for the series and Rae is evidently popular but without a regular vehicle this year. Other possibilities include Christine Ebersole (The Kominsky Method), Jane Seymour (The Kominsky Method), Andie MacDowell (Mr. Mayor), Vanessa Williams (Girls5eva), America Ferrera (Superstore), and Andrea Anders (Ted Lasso). I would throw a party if Shalita Grant (Search Party) got nominated, but I think that’s wishful thinking.
The predicted nominees: Fey, Rae, Rudolph, Taylor-Joy, Wiig
The predicted winner: I’m thinking maybe Rae can win this. But who knows?
