What I’m Watching: How I Met Your Father

How I Met Your Father: Season 1, Episode 5 “The Good Mom” (B+)

I was pleased to recognize Sophie’s mom by the voice of the actress portraying her alone, and I was lucky to have the opportunity to speak with Paget Brewster, who I remember best as Kathy from “Friends” and on “Grandfathered,” a show where she humorously played the mother of Josh Peck’s character, a few months ago. She definitely seemed like she had a reputation that made her relationship with her daughter complicated, and it was Valentina who ultimately stepped in to clue her best friend in to the fact that she was the one who always sabotaged her wild romances. I couldn’t figure out where I knew her clueless young boyfriend from, and some quick research reminds me that Mason Gooding played by Nick, Beanie Feldstein’s crush, in “Booksmart.” It was very sweet that, after she missed game night to be with her mom, Drew expressed in charades that he was glad to see her. Sid’s concern about how he knew Sophie’s mom and her poster was entertaining, and that whole thing focused much more on Jesse having to come to terms, with Charlie’s help, with his proposal fail and taking charge again of her life. Ellen did seem to get along quite well with the granddaughter of the dead neighbor she didn’t know, and it’s a shame that she confronted her with wrong information that seems to have stunted any possibility of them ever getting a chance to really know each other. Ellen could use a positive dating experience, even if she’s likely to go all in far too soon.
