Snowpiercer: Season 3, Episode 3 “The First Blow” (B+)
It’s good to see the two trains together and this happening so quickly, though I do worry that keeping Wilford alive is a mistake, since he’s likely to take advantage of behavior he would never allow to show that ruthlessness is crucial, even for the good guys. Turning off the power of the train to leverage everyone’s life was a bold and cruel move, but Josie and Layton managed to execute their own game-changing operation, which left Wilford looking shocked and destitute after Layton gave him a beating that’s been coming to him for a long time. I could have done without the torture and the tongue removal, but Kevin won’t be spending any more time aboard Snowpiercer now that LJ, ever the survivor and opportunist, killed him off so that she can be on what now looks like the right side of history. Getting Asha to lie about who she was may prove a mistake, especially because she’s obviously suffering and in deep distress as she has to breathe under that helmet, but it did achieve the desired result, using the democratic process to make a decision about the train’s course. Heading to the Horn of Africa is a big deal, and I can’t imagine what they find there will be as sunny and wonderful as it seems, but it’s good to know that there’s something to look forward to, which will surely bring with it plenty of twists and treachery. At least Javi was happy to see Ben – it’s been a rough ordeal for those aboard Wilford’s train, and maybe things will actually get better now.
