What I’m Watching: Better Call Saul

Better Call Saul: Season 6, Episode 6 “Axe and Grind” (B+)

Starting with a young Kim getting caught shoplifting by her mother who sounded just like her but was actually part of a joint con underlined one again that she shouldn’t be underestimated. While Jimmy is very into his elaborate schemes and always remains enthusiastic, Kim is cool under pressure and has a more legitimate reputation to lean on from which she actually makes her living. Being asked if she and Jimmy were registered anywhere hit her in a strange way, likely because Jimmy and Kim are not a typical couple and have never stopped to do ordinary things like celebrate their marriage as anything but the most logical next step. Not being there for what they called D-Day seemed like it should have been fine, but then Jimmy went ahead and realized that their mark had a very different distinguishing feature than the one they had replicated with their mustache-obsessed actor. While Cliff was ready to offer Kim a dream job, Howard has been carefully surveilling Jimmy and calculating how to catch him at exactly the right moment. Opening up to his wife, played by the dependable Sandrine Holt from “Hostages” and “House of Cards,” that things were likely going to get worse with Jimmy shows that he knows the risk Jimmy poses to his livelihood even if he is ready to take him down once and for all. We’re also seeing more of Lalo’s hunt for vengeance and the latest aspects of his complicated plan to officially come back to life.
