Maid: Season 1, Episode 4 “Cashmere” (B+)
I appreciated that even the characters who initially seemed like villains are turning out to be more sophisticated than it initially seemed. We’ve already seen that with Sean, who now appears to be close to getting his white chip but is still expressing entirely selfish behavior, upset that he had to come meet Alex at a time that was convenient to her and that Alex hadn’t given her a snack. He wouldn’t consider that she might need to work on Thanksgiving because making money was most important, and it was weird that they both saw each other on Tinder. I had a feeling that the actor I recognized who Alex swiped past would have a bigger role, and that turned out to be correct. Théodore Pellerin was a memorable part of the first episode of “On Becoming a God in Central Florida,” which was all I watched of that show, and he was great here too as someone who was very earnest and didn’t get the same openness and truth from Alex in return. Her inviting him to Regina’s while pretending she lived there seemed like a very bad idea, and fortunately he was able to sneak out without incident. Regina was much moAlex’s situation than she had previously been, and they had an exchange that made them feel much more like equals than their unfortunate first encounter. I’m curious to see whether this is going to lead to more work for Alex or if their relationship is going to turn into something more like friendship.
