Emmy Episodes: The Ms. Pat Show

The Ms. Pat Show: Season 1, Episode 5 “Baby Daddy Groundhog Day” (B)

This is the only drama or comedy series to receive an Emmy nomination for directing without a corresponding series bid, and I’ll admit that I had never heard of it before it was announced as a nominee. What I found is that it premiered its ten-episode first season back in August on BET+ before airing those same installments weekly on BET this past spring, and season two actually premieres today on BET+. This show fulfills the rule that one of the comedy directing nominees needs to be a multi-camera series, but it’s still surprising that it made the cut given its low profile. I wasn’t sure how much I was supposed to know about these characters jumping into an episode midway through its first season, but the focus was pretty specific for this installment. Knowing what the title was ahead of time, I had an idea of what was going to happen, but I still think it was a clever way of exploring Brandon’s complicated relationship with a birth father who didn’t seem invested enough in him to have met him before that moment. I liked the many scenarios that resulted in his demise or arrest, and how each one was substantially different, based mainly on who answered the door. There was a serious undercurrent to the episode that ultimately worked well, and I imagine that this Emmy nomination may give a spotlight to a show that likely hasn’t been widely seen outside of BET+ subscribers, though re-airing it on BET certainly helps.
