What We Do in the Shadows: Season 4, Episode 7 “Pine Barrens” (B+)
One of the most endearing parts of this show, which is often just quite absurd, is when Laszlo shows genuine affection for someone else. It’s rare, but it happened when he realized that Colin was dying in the previous season, and now we got to see that when he acknowledged that he’s not one for the sappy stuff but he does care for Nandor. Their back-and-forth bickering was quite entertaining, like Nandor asking if Laszlo was going to help with the luggage and Laszlo saying that he wasn’t planning too, and Nadja’s diagnosis of the problem as having existed for the last eighty or so years suggests it needed some addressing. After Colin asks Sean if he thought he was boring because he was pretty sure that Laszlo didn’t like him, he figured out exactly what to do to fell the apparently very real Jersey Devil, who was distracted enough to dance to the music Colin pulled up to be drained by Laszlo and Nandor, working together for once. It was fun to watch this episode after having the chance to meet actor Harvey Guillén at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards last weekend and to see him joyfully accept the prize for Best Cable Comedy. Guillermo being gay turned out to be something his family had known all along, whereas him living with vampires attracted considerably more scorn after Nadja did a decent job of winning them over before their instincts kicked in. Guillermo should consider himself lucky that everyone survived that, but Nadja has a soft spot she only seldom shows too.
