What I’m Watching: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Season 1, Episode 13 “Josh and I Go to Los Angeles!” (B+)

While it’s not too common to find characters actually doing their jobs on this show, it’s a nice treat to see Rebecca really shine in her chosen field. I love that it also means that the entire town of West Covina, as represented by the customers in the bar where Greg works, is watching her and rooting for her since she has managed to mold to and embrace the real values that are part of the community. Having her square off with her childhood nemesis who got the promotion that she turned down to follow Josh to California only increased the stakes. While I wasn’t too fond of the name of their squabble song – JAP Rap Battle – I did love some of the lyrics included, particularly “We’re liberal, duh, progressive as hell, though of course I support Israel” and “You’re tripping like Birthright.” Parodying “Les Miserables” with the members of the water class action was also entertaining, and it’s great that Rebecca will still score more than a moral win thanks to the evidence she just subtly handed to an inquiring journalist. It’s nice to see Darryl and White Josh’s relationship progressing as Darryl had trouble coming out locally and then still found White Josh there to support him in Los Angeles, which compelled Darryl to loudly proclaim his affection. I still can’t believe that Josh and Rebecca finally kissed, and Paula absorbed it perfectly, so excited for her and ready to sadly inform Greg that he and Rebecca just weren’t meant to be. The only better news than that kiss is that this show has been renewed for a second season!
