What I’m Watching: Grandfathered

Grandfathered: Season 1, Episode 18 “Catherine Sanders” (B+)

Seeing this episode’s title ahead of time gave away the fact that Catherine Sanders might play more than just a passing role, but I still love that I was caught off guard by the introduction of a strong female character other than Sara and Vanessa who gives Jimmy a real run for his money. Doing to him what he was planning to do to her - and first - after she suggested going back to her place because it was nicer even though she hadn’t seen his place was a sign that she was just as much of an operator as him, though far less inclined to play games as evidenced by her immediate departure when he was eating popcorn in his pajamas at his apartment. I was even more thrilled to see that Catherine was portrayed by Regina Hall, who played another fantastic love interest in “People, Places, Things,” a movie from Sundance 2015 that everyone should go see. I hope she sticks around, and it seems like she may not be the only one since love is in the air for multiple characters. Sara getting herself arrested after casually dropping a joint out the window of Craig’s car didn’t lead to great places, but she salvaged it by inviting him over and atoning for her sins. Even Gerald and Vanessa managed to get back together after Gerald spruced up the empty room in Jimmy’s restaurant to make it their dream office. While they have to keep Edie as their priority, I do think the idea of them dating is a nice one, and should provide some entertainment as well as some hopeful happiness for them.
