Emmy Predictions: Best Directing for a Drama Series
The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 14th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Eldorado (Boardwalk Empire), Mother’s Mercy (Game of Thrones), Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken (Game of Thrones), From A to B and Back Again (Homeland), Method and Madness (The Knick)
The competition: This category tends to be a good one for pilots, and there are a new this year that could contend, including Billions, Jessica Jones, The Man in the High Castle, Mr. Robot, Narcos, The Path, Underground, and Vinyl, any of which could be recognized here even if they don’t make the cut for Best Drama Series. I would count on “Game of Thrones” getting nominated for two installments again this year, and I think that Battle of the Bastards and The Door are the episodes most likely to be selected. “Better Call Saul” submitted a bunch of episodes, and though the show didn’t make the cut in this race last year, it’s possible that an episode, probably Fifi or Klick, could show up here. I don’t expect that “Homeland” will be honored again, but if it is, The Tradition of Hospitality is the episode I’d expect to see. “Orange is the New Black” could contend for a variety of episodes, including A Tittin’ and a Hairin’ and Mother’s Day. For its series finale, Episode 9, “Downton Abbey” could return to this race, and “The Good Wife” might also contend for its finale, End. “The Leftovers” wasn’t Emmy-friendly last year, but International Assassin could change that, and if drama voters feel the same way comedy voters do about Louis C.K., Episode 110 of “Horace and Pete” could be recognized. This year, there will be six nominees instead of the traditional five.
The predicted nominees: Pilot (Billions), Battle of the Bastards (Game of Thrones), The Door (Game of Thrones), eps1.0_hellofriend.mov (Mr. Robot), Descenso (Narcos), The Macon 7 (Underground)
The predicted winner: Mr. Robot
