What I’m Watching: The Affair

The Affair: Season 3, Episode 5 (B)

I’ll still contend that the material being covered right now isn’t nearly as interesting as it was when this show first started or even in season two, and I don’t love that we’re not seeing the whole picture in every episode, particularly because it means no Helen in this hour. What we got was a whole lot more conversation than usual between Noah and Alison as we saw the aftermath of him showing up unexpectedly on the road. In her recollection of events, she wasn’t at all happy to see him, and she emphasized him signing divorce papers while he was trying to get her to come with him to Block Island. Alison diagnosed their relationship pretty well as one where they mutually used each other while they were hot tubbing naked together, and of course such escapes from reality lead to problematic consequences like missing the last ferry of the day. Noah telling he did love her and agreeing to stay away was an important turning point, but when we saw things from his point of view, they all happened very differently. He shared tremendously about watching someone he loves die and Alison gently offered to leave first while she was comforting him. What’s very clear is that his time in prison was intense and horrible due to Gunther’s hatred of him, and that driver who ran him off the road at the end of the episode looked a whole lot like the prison guard. Things are not looking good for him at all.
