What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 6, Episode 11 “Raisin’s Back” (B)

I think the funniest part of this episode was its title, which came from Winston, as usual, babbling nonsense in an attempt to say something else. The real return was in the form of Reagan, who I went back and forth on during the course of her brief appearance while Zooey Deschanel was on maternity leave. There’s a marked difference in her behavior now, far more into things than she was before, namely the friendship that she has forged with Jess. One of the key things that made her unlike Jess was that she wasn’t into all of the same stuff as the female roommate she was replacing, and now it seems like they’re buddies and all that has changed. Ultimately, it meant a night of heavy drinking and Jess remembering that she needed to black out after finding out a big secret from Reagan. Nick being impressed with his ability to not seem too attached was hardly the asset he thought it was, but fortunately it all equaled out once Reagan’s own lie about having her own apartment became known. Winston and Cece challenging themselves to create a fake electronic dance music track to fool Schmidt was a fun subplot, and it was another instance of a great friendship that represents more positive usage of Winston. Helping Schmidt admit that he had bad taste but that’s okay was great, and I like that he celebrated the gift of his new chair while acknowledging that one of its assets was that it wasn’t supposed to be remotely comfortable.
