Search Party: Season 1, Episodes 9 and 10 “Password to the Shadows” and “The House of Uncanny Truths” (B+)
I’m about six weeks late to the party here after this show aired its entire first season during Thanksgiving week. I’m still pleased with the way that I chose to watch this show, and I’m even more satisfied with the way it wrapped up. The whole time, Dory was the only one who believed that Chantal was alive and that she was following clues, and she was sort of right save for the fact that she got it all wrong. Portia walking in and casually announcing that she found Chantal, who had just decided to take a break from life, was such an effortlessly easy finish, which was all the more jarring given the deadly action that Dory and Drew had committed just seconds earlier. Dory’s inability to accept the simplicity of her exodus while Drew was trying to console her was intense, and the brief flashbacks to explain all the strange things that she had experienced to make her think that there was a big conspiracy going on. Keith and Lorraine really were just crazy people who latched on to Dory’s story, and Brick was nothing more than an eccentric bridesmaid. It’s exactly the kind of ending this show deserves, and I can’t wait to see what they do in season two. I love all of these characters, particularly Elliott and Portia who are so devoid of morals and think the way they act is acceptable. I’ll be thinking about this show for a while, and though I’ll have to be selective about who I recommend it to since it’s not for everyone, I’m excited to get others into it.
