What I’m Watching: Billions

Billions: Season 3, Episode 6 “The Third Ortolan” (B+)

Well, this certainly counts as a twist. Through everything, Chuck has done all that he can to send Axe to jail, breaking the law to show that Axe is guilty, which we know he is since he’s currently engaged in multiple operations that violate what he’s legally allowed to do. He’s hardly being subtle about it, holding a meeting in a conference room at the office with guards preventing even the highest-ranking of employees from entering. Even if it’s meant to grandstand and underscore the seriousness of the situation, it’s just not smart, and fortunately Taylor is the type of person who just takes it as an opportunity to focus on work. Getting flowers delivered to the office from Oscar showed that Taylor really does value this relationship, and his impulsive appearance led them to a productive environment in which to accomplish a great deal while just being with each other. Wendy made a good decision to choose not to come into the room and thus have to take on Orrin as her lawyer, and it’s important given the situation in which she now finds herself. Bryan was furious at Chuck for daring to try to negotiate his way out of where he now is, and it’s obviously serious if Chuck went crying to his father, who was both sympathetic and firm in his counsel. Going to Axe’s home to speak directly with him was unexpected, and then Chuck opted to go upstairs and betray all that trust to plant the slide. Showing back up at the table with the slide as a peace offering was the biggest shock of all, and I’m so curious to see what happens next. I’m not entirely sure that Chuck didn’t plant a separate slide there, but more so, I don’t know if Ari actually did something to help him or he really did just try to screw him over. This is crazy stuff, and I’m excited to see what comes of it since I never thought this meeting would happen.
