Supergirl: Season 3, Episode 17 “Trinity” (B-)
I’m becoming less and less enthralled with the direction of this season, with a staggering six (!) episodes left until this whole Reign storyline is likely wrapped up for good. This episode made it remarkably simple for the human duo of Lena and Alex to help all our superpowered friends to neutralize two of the worldkillers, leaving Reign as the only one left for them to take down. The notion that the human women who live inside these bodies can overcome the influences of the beings trying to take them over is mildly intriguing, and it tracks that Grace would have given up right away since she had come to share the perspective of Pestilence on what has to be done about the human race. Julia, on the other hand, still fought back, but she was considerably less resilient than Sam, who hung on well until she realized that she couldn’t remember her daughter’s name anymore. I think this show is spending too much time on worrying about betrayal and all that, and Lena’s remark about how Supergirl didn’t realize her true identity to her rang very true due to the double standards put into place by those with powers who can have aliases and secrets. I’m not sure anything good will come of James revealing to Lena that he is Guardian, but it would probably make everything more effective if Lena just joined the DEO’s efforts on a far more full-time, read-in basis.
