What I’m Watching: Santa Clarita Diet

Santa Clarita Diet: Season 2, Episode 6 “Pasion” (B+)

Can saving the world wait another day if you have an important meeting scheduled? Apparently, Joel didn’t think so, leading to a very entertaining visit to the home of one Colonel Ed Thune. Casting Gerald McRaney, Emmy winner for playing the sympathetic doctor who delivered the big three on “This Is Us,” as the colonel was a great idea, and watching him say creepy things to Joel and then take them back before ultimately going rabid on him was a blast. I like how Joel insisted that he eat the danish after he kept saying he was a vegan. Sheila really had to work hard to suppress her every instinct with Carl, who is not only a chauvinist but also a relatively unintelligent human being who refuses to listen to anyone else’s ideas, to his own detriment in this case. It’s good to know that Sheila isn’t getting worse but rather that there are side effects of her condition made much worse by her being stressed. Abby being nervous about telling Eric about her date turned out to be a big nothing since it went poorly and she got to get him back for celebrating that fact. I would have loved to see Joel teach Ann how to tango, though the way that he turned her off of the idea was amusing enough, and Sheila and Joel won’t be able to avoid hosting their neighbors forever. Ann heard Joel raving about the clams, and I’m hopeful that she’ll start to inquire to see what he and Sheila are really up to.
