Grace and Frankie: Season 4, Episode 13 “The Home” (B+)
We knew that Grace and Frankie were going to end up in an assisted living facility, and how they were going to get there seemed pretty obvious too. But that didn’t take into account the fact that neither of them believed that they needed such a transition, and therefore it was up to their kids, who received a steely response when they first brought it up, to convince them. They were clever, dividing and conquering so that Brianna and Mallory could make Frankie believe that she should go to help Grace and Bud and Coyote could trick Grace into thinking that she was doing it for Frankie. It was nice at least that they realized it together when they were ransacking the storage closet of confiscated items, and that they opted to leave for each other also. Stealing the golf cart and driving it back to the beach close to their home was an entertaining and triumphant getaway, and seeing the sign that confirmed that the home had been sold made it apparent that their lives as they remember them can’t continue. Nick showing up to see Grace and trying to fix it all was also unfortunate, and I think Grace knew in that moment that the relationship couldn’t continue. I’m not sure what’s next for our two protagonists, but I have faith that this show will rise above unsophisticated assisted living humor and provide a worthwhile fifth season. Robert and Sol are at a very point different point in their relationship, with a much younger naked man enticing them to consider a modified form of monogamy. This season continued to demonstrate this show’s enduring quality, and I look forward to its return next year.
