What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 7, Episode 4 “Where the Road Goes” (C+)

I’ve never understood this show’s obsession with Furguson and the inappropriate relationship Winston had with him. Some elements of this show - admittedly, fewer and fewer these days - are sophisticated and realistic, but to have such a dramatic unveiling for a cat who Winston inexplicably considered Jewish makes no sense, especially when this show only has eight episodes this season to wrap up all of its arcs. Winston not being able to get over it and putting off his “big cry” was pretty tiresome too, and of course the cat he heard was real and belonged to the bartender played by Tig Notaro. Jess offering up all $5,000 to her in exchange for the cat without lowballing first was mildly entertaining, and having Coach come back just to feud with Nick about his failed “Coach’s Gym” restaurant was relatively pointless. I do think that Ruth’s Chris is an absurd name for a steakhouse since Chris should be the one possessing it, and I reference that all the time. The only line that made me laugh was Nick’s belief that the infamously bad Kevin James movie should have been titled “Paul Blop, Mall Cop.” That’s exactly his kind of logic and what I love best about him. It was sweet that Cece didn’t feel that she could go on without Schmidt, but it took a long time to get there. I love any opportunity to see Sam Richardson from “Veep,” but his hand medicine joke was hardly the best use of his talents.
