Euphoria: Season 2, Episode 5 “Stand Still Like the Hummingbird” (B+)
This was a very intense episode, one that felt so focused and zoned-in on Rue spiraling and lashing out during withdrawal and was at the same time so true to this show’s unique tone. Yelling at her sister for telling on her was the first opportunity she took to burn a bridge, and she was harshest to Jules when she realizes that she was the one who had told her mom. Elliot’s contribution wasn’t all that helpful, expressing that he liked who she was before this, and Leslie had a very tough time getting Rue to agree to go to the hospital. When she mentioned rehab, we saw an almost larger-than-life chain of events with Rue literally running through traffic as Gia was screaming and leaving a trail of destruction in her midst. Showing up at the Howard house prompted some thoughtless comments and whispered judgment from Suze, and Rue then took control of the situation to completely devastate Cassie’s life by revealing her affair with Nate. Maddy’s reaction was about as bad as it could have been, and we’ll have to see what the fallout from that is next episode since Rue dominated the attention for the rest of the hour, breaking into people’s houses and ultimately, after being thrown out by Fezco, deciding to go straight to Laurie. The way she spoke to her, thanks to Martha Kelly’s absolutely fabulous delivery, was oddly soothing but at the same time terrifying, and Rue is not going to be in good shape at all once she gets back to whatever qualifies as normal and learns what both Laurie and everyone else in her life need from her to try to make things right.
