What I’m Watching: Californication

Californication: Season 5, Episode 8 “Raw” (B+)

With no sign of Samurai Apocalypse until the episode’s closing minutes, it’s good to focus on the Moody clan and particularly on Hank, going door-to-door to find out a bit more about his daughter’s new boyfriend and his family. It’s no surprise that the entirely offensive Tyler wrote in detail about his sex life with Becca, but his actually having talent is less expected. Tyler’s mom Lisa was quite a character, and I was worried that, as usual, Hank was going to sleep with her. It turns out, however, that her fascination with penises is wholly artistic, and it seems to be a shared passion between her and her female partner. Tyler being so honest with Hank about initially dating Becca just to meet him was a rare moment of genuine decency, and I had the same reaction as Hank expressed to Karen: he’s actually not that bad. Hank earned points with Karen by not being the one to tell her about Bates’ indiscretion, and things seem blissful at the moment, if not for another development regarding Tyler’s script. Eddie Nero, looking a lot more like his “Parks & Recreation” alter ago Chris Traeger than he used to, is back and just as nutty as ever, working with Samurai Apocalypse on the current movie and ready for his next project, which just happens to be Tyler’s script, something about which Hank is sure to be furious. Charlie’s escapades with Lizzie are wild as ever, but nothing quite compares to the highly disturbing role play demeaning Charlie practiced by Stu and Marcy. Only in this situation would an orgy be a valid possible solution.
