What I’m Watching: Psych (Winter Premiere)

Psych: Season 6, Episode 10 “Indiana Shawn and the Temple of the Kinda Crappy, Rusty Old Dagger” (B+)

I’m always excited to have this show back, and it’s fun to have the recurring character of Despereaux along for the ride in the show’s first installment in a few months. This is among the show’s sillier episodes, and that’s saying something, but it was an enjoyable way of welcoming the show back from its hiatus. Despereaux’s death was very overtly not shown so that it could be possible for him to return later, but the brief period of time in which Shawn legitimately believed him to be dead proved to be quite entertaining. I particularly loved how Shawn’s grief led to an argument and physical fight between Shawn and Gus, in which Shawn’s most memorable line was “You brought a funeral program to a knife fight!” while Gus’ was “You want to bumble with the bee? Zzzz!” The storyline had some amusing echoes of Indiana Jones, and as usual, both Shawn and Gus played perfectly into its ridiculousness. The museum guide was incredibly mean, and in this case that was a positive thing since Shawn and Gus were definitely up to no good. In what was surely just a matter of coincidence, the location of the art created by the non-artist was very reminiscent of another USA show that wrapped its run just one night earlier, “White Collar.” Fortunately, in its absence and that of the recently concluded “Royal Pains,” this show will be around to provide some mystery and, more importantly, some laughs for the next six weeks.
