What I’m Watching: Psych

Psych: Season 6, Episode 11 “Heeeeere’s Lassie” (B-)

This show tends to go a bit overboard when it comes to parodies, and it was puzzling to me that they did this since there was already a nod to “The Shining” way back in the season two episode “The Old and the Restless,” where Henry was at a retirement home and was then shown in an ancient photo on the wall. This was a far more extensive riff on the classic 1980 horror film, and as such, was considerably more unhinged and ridiculous. Lassie’s crazy enough without needing to be poisoned, and there wasn’t nearly as much depth as might have been appreciated. There wasn’t much intrigue or explanation about the supernatural forces Lassie thought he was encountering, and while I know that it’s this show’s style, it can be frustrating to explain things away too quickly and ineffectively. I’d like to see a return to more conventional cases, or at least conventional for this show, involving characters like Juliet, and maybe even the Chief, in something other than merely selling Shawn’s possessions to children. The show hasn’t gone downhill since Shawn and Juliet started dating, but a marriage proposal seems like a leap since we never see them doing anything together. William Shatner’s guest appearance at the end of the episode indicates that, should Shawn decide to step up to the plate and propose to Juliet, it’s going to be a bigger ordeal than just ensuring that the engagement ring isn’t hidden in one of the childhood toys he accidentally sold.
