What I’m Watching: The Grinder

The Grinder: Season 1, Episode 15 “The Ties That Grind” (B+)

It’s not going to happen, but it makes sense that Dean would eventually wake up and realize that he can’t be the Grinder forever, and that connecting back to reality might actually be a good idea. Somehow, it still managed to drive Stewart crazy in the process, and then led to the blunt revelation that his therapist Jillian might be a bit inappropriately invested in his therapy due to their apparent romance. It also unraveled whatever tranquility was still present in Stewart’s home life. Ethan betting Debbie that Stewart wasn’t actually fine with her making a life-altering decision without talking to him was an amusing subplot, though he definitely cheated by egging his dad on to bring it up. Dean downplaying the seriousness of his father’s legal woes that threaten the entire firm made it seem like it might become an unimportant subplot, but the way in which Dean Sr. has absolutely no clue that he needs to truly address this suggests that it may well lead to some major struggles for the firm. Dean dating this therapist is a wholly unnecessary distraction, and he’s going to need to really focus with his brother to help get their father out of trouble and ensure the viability of their legal practice. If Todd focused a bit more on helping his employers out with their legal load instead of being endlessly and haplessly loyal to Dean, that could be useful, and at least there’s Claire to always keep things serious and stay focused on the task at hand.
