What I’m Watching: Insecure

Insecure: Season 1, Episode 4 “Thirsty as F**k” (B+)

This episode got off to an amusing rough start with Lawrence’s attempt to have a sexy shower with Issa turned into a disaster with the excessive temperature of the water and the general lack of room for two people to move around comfortably. I like that Lawrence is becoming a substantive character in his own right, seen ready to go with his Best Buy shirt on gazing at the store from a distance and then in action thriving on helping people with simple fixes for their computers. Getting pulled off that role right away to cover washers and dryers was a frustrating development, and I think it’s going to be hard for him to stick with this when he doesn’t feel like he’s going anywhere or even getting to do something rewarding for which he is uniquely qualified. Daniel showing up at Issa’s work threw her way off her game, and then he just happened to be the only music-connected person that Frieda could think of, prompting a major boundary issue between Issa’s personal and professional lives. Talking to Mirror Daniel and determining that he’s her “what if” guy was a fun distraction that does threaten the livelihood of her current relationship, but that’s all going to be in the background since her new problem is the fact that the kids have found her rap, which is definitely not school-appropriate. Molly being charged with talking to the obnoxious other woman of color in her office was uncomfortable, though what ended up happening in the conference room didn’t look any more pleasant.
