Jane the Virgin: Season 3, Episode 3 “Chapter Forty-Seven” (B+)
This was inevitable: after all the buildup and so many years of waiting, the first time Jane had sex wasn’t going to be spectacular. It’s not as if it was all that bad, but rather that Jane didn’t get to enjoy it as she wanted to, whereas Michael had a far more satisfying experience. There was plenty of discussion of their woes throughout the episode in a rather blunt way, and I like that it was relatively unfiltered and wasn’t a taboo subject to discuss. I’m also grateful that Jane sending the video to her professor by mistake, an obvious and predictable move for this sometimes silly telenovela, was almost entirely glossed over and instead used as an indicator that Jane’s romance writing was struggling because she couldn’t really relate to her main character. Now that she’s experienced something, it should help, and I appreciate it being framed in this manner, All this talk of the CW being a no-name network was a bit excessive, and I take it as more of a compliment that it’s managed to succeed so well and produce such quality programming. I do think Rob Lowe would fit in oddly well on this show, but for now we’ll have to settle for the likes of Gloria Estefan. I’m intrigued by what Rose is planning and whether she’s actually going straight, but I suspect that Rafael and Michael aren’t going to give up that easily on finding her, especially considering the fact that she added a new victim to her list very recently.
