What I’m Watching: You’re the Worst

You’re the Worst: Season 3, Episode 10 “Talking to Me, Talking to Me” (B+)

This was a very contemplative episode for all our characters, and things ended in a very dramatic context. Jimmy getting super energized to build a treehouse was typical, and after he got up there, swore off his father, and thanked his tools, he predictably knocked his ladder down and got himself stuck up there. Being inspired to write was a positive, but then he took a more thoughtful look down at the world beneath him which caused him to question everything, included a shocked and devastated Gretchen. She tried to be focused throughout the episode but got distracted by things like masturbation, and she found a surprising source of inspiration in Lindsay. The woman who got talk a hardline pro-lifer into supporting her abortion has a very simplistic approach to life, which involves her thinking the most basic thoughts and then moving on seconds later to whatever next attracts her attraction. Ending her pregnancy and preparing to divorce Paul are big steps, and the flirtatious and kindhearted Paul is going to be beside himself if he she ever actually musters up the courage to truly finish her marriage. I couldn’t have been more excited to see Dorothy for the first time in a while, but it seems that, while she’s more than ready to improvise at an audition after preparing for the wrong role, she doesn’t see the same commitment to success in Edgar’s pursuit of his Dr. Weed identity. In funnier things, I love that on this show there’s a show being developed for Waze that only places at stoplights and in traffic, and I appreciated the reference to Gretchen not washing her legs, one of the most hilarious concepts on this show.
