What I’m Watching: Billions

Billions: Season 5, Episode 5 “Contract” (B)

It’s been a long time since we last saw Bryan, and I had honestly forgotten all about him. Bringing in his brother Jackie to help them with a jewelry heist meant that Bryan got the chance to slug Chuck for all of his betrayal and that Kate now has a romantic interest. This episode was full of couplings, with both Chuck and Wendy moving on rather quickly and investing deeply with Cat and Nico, respectively. They all met each other sooner than expected thanks to the hospitalization of Chuck Sr., and I guess it’s good that they’re both on a level playing field. I don’t think Axe will be too happy when he learns that the painter he bought to win one war has caused him to lose another, though he was much more focused on his own paternal issues in this hour. I couldn’t remember if we had met Axe’s parents before, but it became clear that Axe didn’t want to have anything to do with his father, and he got his revenge after he manipulated his mother into giving him a car by delivering it in compact form to his front door. Taylor continues to prioritize business decisions over personal ones, which meant that she didn’t listen to Lauren and offered Wendy a much higher percentage of the country than she would have taken to demonstrate her commitment to the partnership. On the guest star front, I recognized Wendie Malick from “Hot in Cleveland” and “Just Shoot Me” just as much by her voice as her face.
