What I’m Watching: Council of Dads

Council of Dads: Season 1, Episode 6 “Heart Medicine” (B)

Aside from one signature parental figure dying, this show doesn’t seem to truly approach lasting consequences for anyone else. Charlotte collapsing and requiring emergency surgery kept everyone worried all episode, and particularly affected Oliver’s own concern about how he could be a better parent to his existing child, surrogate children, and the next child he was thinking about adopting. It’s certainly heartwarming that the universal reaction from the entire family to Charlotte coming out was one of enthusiastic support, with Oliver feeling special admiration for her because he was in the closet until his late twenties. I’m glad that we get to see some dynamic and complex relationships between kids, namely Charlotte being honest with her best friend who thought she was being replaced. On the note of honesty, Anthony should seriously consider whether he thinks the truth can stay hidden from Luly forever since she did not react well at all to the news that he lied for Scott on the stand, since she won’t ever forgive him if she does discover it at some point down the road, which seems likely given her interest in connecting with her roots. JJ packing a suitcase for the short visit to the hospital since he knew it always ends up being longer was cute, and Larry having positive experiences with him is probably good preparation for his hopeful reconciliation with his own family. Theo sounds ready to take big steps in his relationship, and it appears like he’s just making good choices at the moment.
