This Is Us: Season 6, Episode 11 “Saturday in the Park” (B+)
I’ve been wondering how much of Jack’s future we’re going to get to see before this show ends, but it’s also good to know that there are seven episodes left so there’s still a good deal of time. Knowing ahead of this that the smoker is associated with the day that Kate and Toby’s marriage ended was foreboding, but it was also extraordinarily worthwhile to see the complicity of both parents in this and the ways in which they responded to needing to make sure that their blind son was okay when he was nowhere to be found. The contrast in behavior was particularly stark with Rebecca, who when she was younger and drunk on her anniversary when the kids locked the babysitter in the bathroom and who in the present as a grandmother rushed to the park to find baby Jack. Toby reacting to Kate saying that Kevin was trying to cheer her up got things off to a very bad start, and his annoyance with Kate telling him to parent only made his not bothering to make sure the gate clicked that much less forgivable. While one romance is failing, it’s good to see someone else who has never been particularly mature come around to a different way of thinking. Kevin catching Elijah looking through Madison’s jewelry could have gone much more poorly than it did, and relieving Madison from her emergency contact duties and telling her that he was very happy for her that she was excited about his impending proposal was very sweet.
