The Company You Keep: Season 1, Episode 2 “A Sparkling Reputation” (B+)
I feel like it would be just as fun to travel back in time and see this criminal family at the height of their operations given the way in which they discuss their past hijinks. But that’s not the situation now, and Charlie and Emma came dangerously close to running right into each other in a relatively small space that they were both in trying to accomplish the same thing. Charlie called Emma out right away when she tried to sabotage their relationship before it even got started, and now they’re in a pretty good place aside from the small issue of them completely lying about what they really do. I was surprised that Emma read her brother in so easily to what she really did, but it also tracks that someone qualified to be a senator should be able to keep that information to himself, and he wasn’t likely going to give up trying to get her to be his campaign manager without a legitimate excuse. Daphne is turning into a formidable enemy, connected in a very direct way to the Maguire crime family but also trying to prove herself, while also being very capable of making Birdie nervous and angry with her frequent use of sign language. For the moment, they can still have fun and bring out characters like Milos to enliven their con jobs, but things could get very serious soon if Daphne decides to continue this arrangement and doesn’t want to let them go back to what they were doing.
