History of the World Part II: Season 1, Episode 2 “Part II” (B+)
I’m not sure there’s another show where the words “Previously on the Civil War” wouldn’t sound all that absurd or inappropriate. But then again this episode did open with a very unusual story set during D-Day, with Malcolm Barrett, who I’ve enjoyed watching on “Better Off Ted” and “Timeless,” as the commander of a platoon that just couldn’t stop throwing up from a combination of oysters and natural impulses. I enjoyed that the soldier played by Arturo Castro was just upset that he wasn’t invited to partake in the unsanctioned extracurricular activates. It was also fun to see Nick Robinson as Lincoln’s son who was far more put together than Grant, who managed to give himself away by holding up money with his own face on it before a Red Sox fan went and interrupted the scene. Jake Johnson as Marco Polo and Wanda Sykes as Shirley Chisholm were fun segments, though the majority of this episode was all about what may turn out to be an extended bit, Curb Your Judaism. I like Nick Kroll and am appreciating the many parts he’s playing, including as a stone-faced Henry Kissinger and as Judas, who realized that none of the food being served at Jesus’ big meal was kosher and then trying to get a certain kind of confirmation before peeing on Jesus’ feet and then inadvertently betraying Jesus by giving a signal he hadn’t meant to give. Jay Ellis was a great choice to play Jesus, and J.B. Smoove appearing in the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” spoof was fun too.
