How I Met Your Father: Season 2, Episode 7 “A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Valentina's Day” (B)
It should and did surprise no one that Jesse is not a fan of Valentine’s Day in this belated holiday-themed episode that included footage from “Lizzie McGuire” and a group of generally unhappy people not excited about how they were spending what many believe to be the most romantic day of the year. It’s mildly interesting to learn how Sophie and Valentina met, unaware that they were dating the same guy, but I much more appreciated how upset and offended Sophie got when she found out that Jesse always says “I love you” far too early (I also enjoyed the “Animorphs” reference). It feels painfully obvious that he’s really the father, or that he’s the one who’s essentially Robin for this series, but then we got a completely unexpected and startling shot of Ian, apparently from another Valentine’s Day, which served to confuse and frustrate Sophie’s son quite a bit. It was fun to see Sid try so hard to make Hannah jealous when the two of them just needed to admit they liked each other, and I like the idea that Drew was in on it, enlisted by Hannah to compel Sid to enter into a dance-off to show his jealousy. For all the awkwardness that’s existed in their newish relationship so far, and the misguided attempt to show affection that manifested itself as an ice sculpture of Rachel, it was sweet that, when they couldn’t be together, Rachel was the one who sent Ellen a pizza so that they could at least be eating the same food at the same time.
