What I’m Watching: Burn Notice

Burn Notice: Season 5, Episode 3 “Mind Games” (B+)

It’s good to see that this show is still capable of standing on its own without this new CIA plotline having any part in an episode. I very much enjoyed this particular hour, which brought back Nate, a character who never really has all that much to do but stand by on the sidelines as other things happen around him. In this case, Nate didn’t bring trouble but simply a request for help for a friend. It was absolutely hilarious to see Michael gladly accept free yogurt for life as compensation for his assistance, and he was very funny playing the part as he purposely mangled a number of expressions. Framing Carter as a cop was a cool idea, and it’s always fun to have Sam get into a car accident with someone to keep them delayed. I liked the twist that Carter actually was an FBI agent, and it’s a great thrill to see the whole team spring into action to help protect the good guys. Jesse played his part well also, and it was amusing to hear that he was doing this on his lunch hour. The less prominent subplot of Fiona wanting Michael to get over trying to figure out who burned him – and having Nate talk to him too – is an interestingly dramatic side to a show that’s often lighter. The final scene with Michael insisting that he just needed another minute while Fiona begged him to stop was pretty powerful, and I’m intrigued to see what divisions between them it continues to cause in the future.
