Emmy Predictions: Best Drama Series

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 14th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Breaking Bad, Dexter, The Good Wife, Lost, Mad Men, True Blood

The competition: “Breaking Bad” doesn’t return until next week, and “Lost” is over for good, so count both those out. The inclusion of True Blood is highly unlikely since the third season wasn’t great and even the second season making it in was an enormous surprise. Mad Men, The Good Wife, and Dexter will surely return, which leaves three slots wide open. HBO’s newest hit, Boardwalk Empire, is a lock, while another new shot from the network, Game of Thrones could also contend, but may not have as strong a shot since its quality improved dramatically in the second half of the season. After surprise first-time nominations for stars Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton last year, the final season of Friday Night Lights could earn its first nomination in this category this year. It will have to fight off some tough competition, however, particularly two new AMC series. The fondly-remembered six episodes of zombie series The Walking Dead may fare better than the recently-wrapped The Killing, which proved divisive with its cliffhanger season finale. Two non-freshman FX shows are also in the running. Season two of Justified was even more well-received than the first, and will definitely earn some votes. It’s unlikely that Sons of Anarchy will be honored, but buzz for lead actress Katey Sagal could draw some useful attention to the show. Also, watch out for one unpredictable contender: Showtime’s zany Shameless, which I think would be better off in the comedy races but could fare well enough here.

The predicted nominees: Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, The Good Wife, Mad Men, The Walking Dead

The predicted winner: Boardwalk Empire
