Round Two: Wilfred

Wilfred: Season 1, Episode 2 “Trust” (B+)

Episode two of this wacky show is just as inspired and entertaining as the first. I like how each week opens with a quote and a general theme, and I think that this installment’s title is perfectly fitting. In a way, very little happens in each episode of this show, yet there’s such an intense focus on the characters that the time we do spent with them is extremely informative and enlightening. Ryan continues to be flabbergasted by the way that Wilfred speaks to him and acts in public, but it’s obvious that he’s happy to have a friend. The fact that he agrees to trick Wilfred for Jenna and actually succeeds with it shows that’s he’s very easily influenced. Wilfred, of course, responds with the perfect revenge, allowing Ryan to make a fool of himself suspecting that Jenna is a hermaphrodite rather than revealing that his dentist-bed confession was actually cut off and Jenna has a boyfriend in the form of Chris Klein. Wilfred playing in the ocean was probably the strongest scene of this episode, as Ryan gets to vicariously experience the joy of breaking the rules and not feeling the consequences for such an action, even though he, and not Wilfred, is fined rather heavily. It’s good to see some of Jenna, but I would definitely like to see more of her and especially of Kristen, even if this show is surprisingly capable of functioning quite well while featuring only two of its core cast members and essentially no one else.
