What I’m Watching: Covert Affairs

Covert Affairs: Season 2, Episode 5 “Around the Sun” (B)

The idea of this episode was definitely strong, but there are a few things about it that didn’t quite track with me. I’m not sure exactly what continuing purpose Jai is serving on this show, and it would seem to me that he would be the logical choice to be Auggie’s replacement, thereby giving him something concrete to do on a regular basis other than happen into conversations and get upset about not being promoted. Reva was certainly a thorn in Annie’s side, but to have her break down crying almost instantly after being so rude to Annie was all too convenient. Auggie stepping down instantly is also a shame, especially considering we didn’t even get to see him in the position. All we got was an amusing complaint from Arthur that he was too discreet and vague in his press release. The mission plotline in this episode was decent, and it’s always good to see a great actor like Mark Moses, of “Desperate Housewives” and “Mad Men” fame, get some work. His interview segments and those featuring the astronaut were among the best footage from Annie’s fake film. I was impressed by her creativity and initiative when it came to just calling up and going to the engineer’s house for a barbecue. This business with the lawyer and Arthur and Joan is humorous, mainly thanks to Arthur’s flummoxed reaction to his abrupt departure, but you’d think the head honchos at the CIA would be a bit more adept at seeing the big picture.
