What I’m Watching: Justified
Justified: Season 3, Episode 12 “Coalition” (B+)
This show continues to astonish with each and every episode, intensifying more as the violence escalates and every villain manages to betray his newest ally. Dickie’s never been dumber, waltzing into Boyd’s bar and presuming that he would manage to get on Boyd’s good side by offering up the keys to his treasure. Though he survived Boyd’s initial efforts to suffocate him, thanks to Ava voicing her sound thinking, he didn’t get too far, as Errol delivered him straight into Raylan’s waiting arms, while Limehouse sat outside the house observing the whole thing. As expected, Quarles’ captivity didn’t last long, as he convinced the strippers watching him to join him in doing drugs and then turned deadly serious when he threatened to choke one of them to death with a chain. Coming to see Limehouse may have seemed like a smart move, but the kingpin seems set on getting all of his competition arrested in one fell swoop. The law was so on top of Ava and Arlo’s rather blatant casing of the bank that their complete failure to anticipate the events outside the bar. Wynn’s detonation of the car bomb was oddly timed, since it didn’t manage to kill Quarles but instead permitted him to once again escape. Wynn is the one who advocated for killing Quarles to ensure that he couldn’t slither away, and now he’s done just that, and, aside from Dickie, all the criminals are still likely running free. The opportunity to see Loretta again was a pleasure, and I enjoyed Raylan’s promise to track her down if ever she decides to spend the money Mags left her.
