What I’m Watching: Psych

Psych: Season 6, Episode 14 “Autopsy Turvy” (B+)

Though it was hardly germane to the plot, I’ve never been happier to see the Chief. She’s been almost entirely absent from recent episodes as Shawn and Gus have gone off to have their adventures mostly without involving SBPD. Her end-of-episode rapping session was a highlight of the episode, even if it was technically a Psych-Out, and, as usual, her performance during the hour was full of fire and impatience. Kurt Fuller’s weird Woody has become a recurring staple on this show, and it’s fun to have him featured so prominently, trading bizarre flirtatious remarks with an old flame of his, Grace, who has come back to challenge his skills by asserting that he missed something big and an accidental death was probably a murder. It’s common that such guest stars end up being the bad guys in cases such as this, but the show managed to distract from that possibility by employing the services of one French Stewart, formerly of “3rd Rock from the Sun,” who here played murder expert Whip Chatterley. His character was peculiar but quite fun, and I like that he won Shawn and Gus over by agreeing to pay for their snacks. I was also pleased to see Kate Micucci, who played Gooch on “Scrubs,” as the performance artist that Lassie didn’t particularly like. This was a fun hour, but I’d still love to see much more of Juliet and Shawn’s relationship, and more collaboration, even if it’s forced, between the psychics and the detectives.
