What I’m Watching: Shameless (Season Finale)

Shameless: Season 2, Episode 12 “Fiona Interrupted” (B+)

This is a fitting finale for this show’s whirlwind season, which saw each and every member of the Gallagher family descend to new depths, and only some of them come out for the better. Interestingly enough, Fiona seems to have found happiness, now that she knows Steve will be there for her and that he loves her. Hopefully Estafania’s return won’t put a damper on their developing relationship, especially now that Fiona and her brothers have met Jimmy’s whole family. The biggest shock of all, somehow unexpected on this utterly depraved series, was that his dad was the very same man that Ian slept with earlier, meaning that, like his son, he has a completely separate and invented life. With Lip out of the house, Ian tried to confide in Fiona, but he couldn’t quite do it. The daring jailbreak from the institution had unanticipated results, as Monica bade farewell to her younger daughter and drove off into the moonlight with Jenna Elfman’s hardcore lesbian prone to excessive stabbing. Sheila’s theft of the baby and her efforts to feed it breast milk with Jody were entertaining, and the visit by Tony and the other cop didn’t help Karen’s case that the baby should be taken away from her loving grandmother. Sheila choosing the baby over Karen is sure to mess her up more than she already is, and she’ll be just as disturbed as Lip soon enough, who may have taken his AP Physics final but still isn’t over another troublesome girl. Carl’s obsession with ordering expensive meets at the family dinner was fun, and I do love just how much this show invests in its characters. I can’t wait for season three of this unique and unparalleled show.

Season grade: A-
Season MVP: Emmy Rossum as Fiona
