Legends of Tomorrow: Season 2, Episode 3 “Shogun” (B+)
This show is down a few characters, but it’s still going strong and I actually think probably even more fun than season one. I was going to say that Nate is essentially like a steel Silver Surfer, but on second thought he’s much more like another Marvel hero, Colossus. It’s good to see that there are no adverse side effects to Ray’s carefully-calculated serum, and that his only real struggle was to figure out how to “flame on,” so to speak, to continue the Marvel references. The horseplay that Ray and Nate were engaging in did cause some unforeseen travel back to feudal Japan, a field trip that could probably have been avoided. Ray getting his suit stolen and then having to destroy it when it was put on by an evil samurai was an unfortunate moment, but he seems to have moved past it, and hopefully his next Atom suit will be even cooler. Vixen stowing aboard the Waverider and vowing revenge on the whole crew for Hourman’s death led to an entertaining banter with Mick and an ultimately helpful presence rescuing the stranded crew members in Japan. Sara’s delivery of “I’m basically a ninja” was flawless, and I’m really enjoying seeing her as the captain. I loved Jax referencing “Lost” and the lesson not to go opening secret hatches, and it seems that whatever message he and Stein heard from the future Barry is immensely disconcerting and likely spells certain doom for all these legends of tomorrow that they’ll have to work hard to rewrite.
