What I’m Watching: Legion

Legion: Season 1, Episode 4 “Chapter 4” (B+)

This show continues to astound me. I’ll admit that this isn’t the happiest I’ve been to see Jemaine Clement, mainly because his character here is completely crazy and representative of the nuttiness of the astral plane that doesn’t make any bit of sense to me. The notion that David was asleep for this whole episode but that he was powerful enough to will himself out of unconsciousness to teleport to a place where he thought Syd was in danger is incredible. The most important thing that we learned in this extended hour was that Lenny is actually Benny, a male friend of David’s who for some reason has been replaced in his manipulated memories, and she’s the one who is egging him on to do violent things and apparently turn into the freaky man that is haunting his dreams and memories. The visit Syd, Ptonomy, and Kerry paid to Dr. Poole was interesting at the start and then got infinitely more so when he turned out to be the Eye, who, despite Syd’s warnings, touched her and then ended up appearing like her and fooling David long enough for him to start running and then shoot Kerry. This show continues to end in the middle of intense scenes, and after seeing Cary feel that same gunshot, I’m very eager to find out what happens next. This show has a mesmerizing central character but truly succeeds because of how unbelievably intriguing and complex all of its supporting players are, both good and bad.
