What I’m Watching: Santa Clarita Diet

Santa Clarita Diet: Season 1, Episode 6 “Attention to Detail” (B+)

It’s not too surprising to me that, in the middle of all their antics, Joel and Sheila left a pen with their business name on it under Loki’s couch. They don’t yet know that Loki is not actually dead but much more of a threat, but this was enough to send them panicking, splitting up with Sheila doing what she likes to do while Joel fixes their other big problem. Dan, in addition to being obnoxious, isn’t a particularly good guy, and the fact that he has a secret stash of contraband in his garage to me doesn’t even compare to the fact that he told Joel to kill someone he described as a child molester who was actually just his wife’s new boyfriend. I did think that Ryan Hansen from “Party Down” seemed a strange choice to play Sheila’s newest victim, and things got even sillier when Lisa spotted Sheila in her pink poncho and she came up with the perfect excuse, that she was going to a charity watermelon-eating contest. Joel accidentally saying his real name when questioned was hilarious, and everything after that was a bit messy, and I loved his reaction to finding out that Marcus was the boyfriend that she was talking to him about, resulting in a hefty knockout blow for Joel as punishment. I like that Abby is trying hard to just have fun and not be weird with Eric, something that’s not going terribly well but is definitely enjoyable to watch. Their plan to prank Dan seems to have been interrupted by Joel’s heat-of-the-moment act of passion, so we’ll see where that leads.
