What I’m Watching: Santa Clarita Diet

Santa Clarita Diet: Season 1, Episode 5 “Man Eat Man” (B+)

Now this was a great episode. I think we can all agree that Ricardo Chavira deserves the MVP award for this episode, with Dan excitedly using the found finger to his advantage to try to befriend Joel and then telling him that he needs him to kill someone while he’s away on an alibi hunting trip. Of course Sheila was most upset that he was sexist to assume that it was Joel and not Sheila who killed Gary – because that’s what matters, naturally – but she’s right that this could be an amazing way for them to be able to keep Sheila fed and cozy up to Dan, who could be a helpful ally for them. After Joel got his helpful translation from the principal’s Polish-hating grandmother, he started freaking out a lot and nearly messed up a sale when he went to go tell Sheila what state they were in. Their realtor show was brilliant, and getting caught putting on plastic was a poor point that led to him escaping, only Sheila managed to bite him and now he’s turned into a zombie, which is pretty much Dan’s worst nightmare given that he wanted him killed. Sheila getting stabbed and then just pulling the knife right out was a cool moment, and my favorite part was the intense musical score during the attack. “I’ve being doing well sneaking up on people and killing them” was the best line of the hour, and I also enjoyed all of Abby’s quips. Eric was on fire, chastising his mom for talking about masturbation and telling Abby that he knows she’s having an affair, and his attempt to salvage Abby not being into his kiss was pretty hilarious and fantastic. I’m into this show now and excited for what’s to come.
