The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 16th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, Joan Cusack, Tina Fey, Natasha Lyonne, Melissa McCarthy
The competition: Only one of these nominees is eligible again this year, and that’s Joan Cusack (Shameless), who is a sure thing. The three “Orange is the New Black” ladies are competing in the supporting drama category. Tina Fey (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) is likely to take the spot she occupied last year, which leaves four spots open. I couldn’t identify too many legitimate contenders, so this category could end up with a number of surprises. I’m betting on past nominees Elizabeth Banks (Modern Family) and Christine Baranski (The Big Bang Theory) to return, and the likeliest to join them are Kristen Johnston (Modern Family) and Rita Moreno (Jane the Virgin). Also in the running are Tyne Daly (Modern Family), Kyra Sedgwick (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Mary Steenburgen (Togetherness), and plenty of other longshots.
