The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 16th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler, Taylor Schilling
The competition: One nominee from last year has been transplanted to the drama race this year, and that’s Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black). Conventional wisdom says that spot is going to Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), though it’s always possible voters won’t be able to look past the network on which it airs. I’m not confident that Lena Dunham (Girls) or Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly) will be able to hold on to their spots, with newcomers Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Jane Fonda (Grace and Frankie), and Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie) vying for a place. Past nominee Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) could return to the lineup, and Emmy Rossum (Shameless) might finally earn her overdue first nomination. I think a onetime previous nominee whose show returned this year will grab the final spot: Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback).
The predicted nominees: Edie Falco, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ellie Kemper, Lisa Kudrow, Amy Poehler, Gina Rodriguez
The predicted winner: Poehler
