Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 16th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Fred Armisen, Andre Braugher, Ty Burrell, Adam Driver, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Tony Hale

The competition: All six of last year’s nominees are in the running again, and I’m predicting that half of them will miss the mark this year. The surest new thing is Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), and I’m betting that he’ll be joined by Jaime Camil (Jane the Virgin), provided that show is received warmly. I think that Hale will be bumped by a costar of his, Hugh Laurie (Veep), this season’s standout, but it could also be former guest acting nominee Gary Cole (Veep). Past Emmy favorites Martin Sheen (Grace and Frankie) and Sam Waterston (Grace and Frankie) might show up, as could T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley). It seems that Ty Burrell (Modern Family) is the preferred cast member on his show, with Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) ranking as the only one nominated each year with him. Past nominee Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) and Ed O’Neill could easily return too.

The predicted nominees: Fred Armisen, Andre Braugher, Titus Burgess, Ty Burrell, Jaime Camil, Hugh Laurie

The predicted winner: Burgess
