Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 16th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Louis C.K., Don Cheadle, Ricky Gervais, Matt LeBlanc, William H. Macy, Jim Parsons

The competition: All of last year’s nominees are eligible again, but Ricky Gervais (Derek) is now competing in the limited series or special race since his show aired its wrap-up special during the eligibility period. His slot will all but certainly go to Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent). The question is whether all the other nominees, who are well into their shows’ runs, will remain. I’m worried that Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) will be cast aside just as he was by Golden Globe voters despite his show still being excellent. The likeliest to replace him is Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), whose show is immensely popular right now. Freshman contenders Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Billy Crystal (The Comedians), and Steve Coogan (Happyish) also have a shot, as does Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), who was snubbed last year after winning a Golden Globe.

The predicted nominees: Louis C.K., Don Cheadle, William H. Macy, Thomas Middleditch, Jim Parsons, Jeffrey Tambor

The predicted winner: Tambor
