It’s hard to know where this show is going to go next, and it’s definitely interesting, if certainly not uplifting, to see what’s happening in a place between Gilead and Canada (not geographically, of course, because they’re much further west). June and Janine managed to get on a train relatively easy and survived potential hypothermia to reach somewhere that Gilead hadn’t yet declared victory and where their train was immediately derailed so that they could make their escape. Everyone who saw them seemed shocked by the fact that they were real handmaids, and it was deeply disappointing to see the currency of trade that was demanded in exchange for them having a safe place to stay. I couldn’t remember if we had ever seen Janine flashbacks, and there’s definitely a liveliness to her that used to exist that has now been replaced by a childishness as she has accepted some of the circumstances around her, like what she had to do when June refused. The idea of a crisis pregnancy center feels so tame compared to what Gilead is now, and I’m curious what happened to that woman who told her she shouldn’t have an abortion when the government was overthrown and ultra-conservative mindedness took over. Rita made a very deliberate choice after Serena mistook her genuine happiness about her pregnancy as an indication of a friendship between them, and Fred alleging that he always treated her well was hardly an effective defense in light of everything else he has done.
